(right) lucy atwood, 8 killed her first deer saturday, 10/28/17. range 110 yards - one shot dead. the rifle is a 223 ai with a sirocco 70 gr bullet. 5/8/17 - chad atwood (left) and robert alexander with philip fontenote 5/8/17 - robert alexander (left) and kc horne (chad atwood's guest) 5/8/17 - chad atwood 11/6/16 - daviss coble harvests doe and coyote... 11/6/16 - ...and daviss coble harvests an 8-pointer too! 11/5/16 - chris slover, opening day - muzzle loader season 11/21/15 - 9 pointer, 175 lbs. great job, evan!!!!! rusty dunn from a ranch in texas keegan's buck by: keegan sheanshang it was 5 in the morning in tennessee when i woke up. in tennessee, the time is an hour behind, so in cincinnati it was 6. my mom showed me where my long underwear was. then, she gave me my pink shirt, jeans, and over that, i wore a one-suit. a one-suit is a shirt and pants put together. after i got my clothes on, my mom threw socks at me. my socks that i brought were way to small, so my mom had asked my grandma if i could wear her socks. i went out to the kitchen and my mom gave me a cinnamon bun and some cereal for breakfast. after breakfast, i put my socks and boots and my dad gave me an ear warmer from the attic. i got my orange vest and put it on. you wear orange so other hunters know where you are and because deer can't see orange. dad and me started walking down the stairs towards the truck. my dad brought two guns just in case. i was excited so the five-minute ride to hd felt super long. hd stands for hearts desire, it's a hunting club that my grandpa greg and grandma lynn belong to in birdsong tennessee. my dad had to sign us out. after he sighed us out, we started driving down the main dirt road. the main road branched out onto other paths. finally, we reached the place that we were last night. last night, we saw two does and one buck. but i didn't get a chance to shot them. dad and i had to cross a small river before we got to the stand. he went first and i followed. we went to the shallowest part of the river. my dad pulled me on to the bank. we started to walk towards the tree stand. when we got to the stand's ladder, i started climbing up it. when i got close to the top, i opened the door and my dad gave me my gun. when we both got in the stand, we put the guns in the corners of the stand and moved the chairs so we could see out the windows. then, we opened all the windows and stared out into the cornfield. the air was cold; it was 34 degrees out. most of the trees looked like a blur. you could see a little bit of sunlight on top of the trees. i looked to my left. when i stared hard at the woods, i heard the sound of footsteps and what looked to be a big buck. i stared at it for a long time before telling dad. "look," i whispered to dad. "is that a buck in the woods?" my dad looked at it before grabbing his binoculars. he stared at the woods through his binoculars. the sun started rising above the trees, giving more light to us. it took him a while before he said, "no. it's just a dark bush." i stared at the bush, disappointed. "bad bush. bad bush", i thought. then i heard the footsteps again. i stared at the woods. "squirrel!" i huffed in my head. last night, my dad taught me how to tell squirrels between a deer. "but they both sound the same. how can you tell the difference?" i had asked. we had heard tons of squirrels last night. after the sun was a good height for you to see, i got to use the pink ipad. (my mom's.) first, i played a few games of checkers. next, i played some air hockey. at last, i played a game that you make cakes, frost cakes, and eat cakes. as i was playing the cake game, my dad said fiercely, "sh. look. a doe and a buck." he pointed right of me. the buck ran out of the woods, chasing the doe. then the doe went back into the woods, and the buck followed. i stood up. "this is good," dad said. "why?" i asked. "the buck is trying to mate. they follow the does. then they go crazy," he replied. i sat back down. i continued to play in the ipad for some time. every break i got, i slipped my hands into my muffler. after i had finished making one of my cakes, i looked at the field of corn. out of the corner of my eye, i saw movement by the edge of the hillside. i stared at the movement. then i saw it. "buck!" i exclaimed quietly. i pointed to the hillside. my dad saw it too. "yes," he agreed. he got his binoculars and stared at the buck. "can i kill it?" i asked. dad stared at it for a long time. "i'm pretty sure it is a 4 or 6 pointer," he explained. "it's too small of a buck. you shouldn't kill it." when will i kill a deer? i screamed in my head. i have only killed one other deer. i was 7 then. i played on the ipad for a long time. then what dad said made me super happy. "put it down! there is two does by that other stand!" i looked at that stand. sure enough, there was two does by that stand. a third doe started walking out of the woods. "there's a third!" i exclaimed in a whisper. the three does went into the corn and dad took the ipad from me. he put it into his backpack. then he grabbed and loaded the gun. the deer just started eating the corn like they didn't care about the world. they ate the corn from the top of the plant! the first doe that went into the corn was walking into the second lane of corn. the corn was separated into rows. in the middle of two rows would be a shooting lane. that's how we could try to shoot the does. then two of the three does walked into the second row of corn. as the third was getting close to the edge of the corn, dad picked up the gun and let me try to see the doe from it. perfect! the doe walked into the perfect area of shooting. you try to shoot the deer just behind the top shoulder. then the doe walked into the corn. i started to shiver. it was cold! then the first doe started to walk to the third lane of corn. dad saw her and moved the gun. he pushed the safety off. the doe moved into the perfect stance. i got her in my sight. then, she moved. the third doe got into the second lane of corn and disappeared. after that, we couldn't find the three deer. "god, please let me kill a deer today", i whispered. we waited for a few minutes, which felt like a few hours. then something amazing happened. a buck walked out of the woods behind us, no doubt, looking for the three does. the buck walked into the cornfield. dad saw the buck, but then the buck disappeared. he grabbed the binoculars and tried to look for the buck. there it was, behind the corn. then the buck walked up, between the lanes. in the shooting lane. dad picked up the gun and i aimed it at the buck. bang! i used b.r.a.s.s. (breath, relax, aim, squeeze, shoot.) the deer fell down to the ground and started kicking around. dad shot it two times.
